How Do I Calculate C.B.M?
Volume (m³) = Length (m) x Width (m) x Height (m)
Length (m): Measure the length of the container in meters.
Width (m): Measure the width of the container in meters.
Height (m): Measure the height of the container in meters.

Ocean Freight

C.B.M ( M³ ) = Length (max) * Width (max) * Height (max)

Formula for Ocean Freight Charges: Ocean Freight Charges ($) = Total C.B.M x Freight Rate per C.B.M

Air Freight

  • Calculate Volumetric Weight (kg) for each item using the formula: Volumetric Weight (kg) = (Length (m) x Width (m) x Height (m)) / Volumetric Conversion Factor (e.g., 6,000 for international shipments).
  • Calculate Chargeable Weight (kg) for each item as the higher of the actual weight or volumetric weight.

Sum up the Chargeable Weights of all items and multiply by the Freight Rate ($/kg) to calculate Air Freight Charges ($).

The formulas provided in each table can be used to calculate the charges for your specific shipments based on the given parameters and rates.

Container Type Length (m) Width (m) Height (m) Capacity (C.B.M)
20-foot Standard 6.06 2.44 2.59 31.72
40-foot Standard 12.19 2.44 2.59 67.64
40-foot High Cube 12.19 2.44 2.89 92.74
45-foot High Cube 13.72 2.44 2.89 104.50
20-foot Reefer 5.45 2.26 2.26 28.80
40-foot Reefer 11.58 2.26 2.26 57.90

Using a C.B.M calculator is a practical way to streamline logistics operations, from planning shipments to optimizing storage in warehouses. It helps businesses make informed decisions and ensures accurate cost calculations in the transportation of goods.

Can I Use a C.B.M Calculator for Irregularly Shaped Cargo?

Yes, You will be able to calculate C.B.M for irregularly shaped cargo by measuring its longest length, width, and height, including any protrusions that affect your cargo size.

Important Note: Be sure to Comply with the carrier size limits to meet eligibility requirements considering that the final decision rests with the shipping company.

Ask the Experts to optimize your cargo spaces and cost.

What is the C.B.M vs. Weight Calculation for Shipping?

The key difference between C.B.M and Weight is that C.B.M prioritizes size, while Weight prioritizes mass.

What it is?

  • C.B.M Calculations are used to measure volume of the cargo.
  • Weight Calculations are the measurement of the weight of the cargo.

When it is used?

  • Ocean Freight charges often rely on C.B.M. C.B.M is typically used for bulkier items such as furniture or machinery as they take up much more space relative to weight.
  • Air Freight Pricing is often prioritizing weight over volume. Weights are crucial for denser shipments as they are the key element to determine air freight costs.

Still not sure if you need C.B.M or Weight Calculation for your shipment? Trusting a Y5 Logistics Expert to help you to find a most cost efficient way to ship.

How Is Logistics Density Used in Pricing?

Density pricing bases shipping costs on how much space a package takes up compared to its weight.

Density-based pricing ensures fairer rates for LTL shipments. Contact a Y5 Logistics expert to discover more efficient shipping solutions.

Can I Use C.B.M to Calculate Storage Space in Warehouses?

Yes, the key to finding your warehouse capacity is to use C.B.M. There are 3 key notes to calculate warehouse C.B.M

  • Account for obstacles in the warehouse such as pillar; equipment; and storage racks.
  • Ensure consistent units when measuring. It is crucial to have all units in the same metrics (all in meters) when measuring for Cubic Meter.
  • Consider irregular shapes. When owning a storage space with irregular shapes, you need to divide them into smaller regular shapes (rectangles or cubes) and calculate each C.B.M separately

The following are some other considerations when measuring Storage Space: Pallet Size; Number of Pallets; Stacking Height; Warehouse Utilization Ratio

Are There Online C.B.M Calculators Available?

Yes, many online C.B.M calculators are available for free. You can find them on logistics and shipping websites or by searching “C.B.M calculator” on the internet; however, some are less practical for more complicated shipments.
